Art

At Whitehill Primary School,we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum.  Our Art curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials and encourage children’s critical abilities and understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages, through studying a diverse range of male and female artists.  The skills they acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth whilst simultaneously engaging, inspiring and challenging pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Pupils are made aware of intended outcomes and have a means to measure their own and others’ work against these, as well as celebrate the diversity within their work. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.  This should be meaningful and continuous throughout the process, with evidence of verbal and written reflection.

We teach Art and Design with an attitude of non-judgement, a belief that mistakes are to be celebrated, learned from and used. A belief that creative potential is inside everyone and can be found everywhere. We celebrate the process as well as the ‘finished’ artwork.
