Whitehill Primary School & Nursery
Developing confidence, ambition and independence through the highest aspirations for all

Maths

At Whitehill Primary school, children learn to recognise and make sense of the maths in the world around them. Through skilled, confident teaching and collaboration with peers, the children use a wide range of practical resources to develop a deep understanding of the number system and calculations. They grow to appreciate relationships and pattern in number, shape and space in their everyday lives. The mastery approach encourages greater depth understanding, building a solid foundation, equipping the children for future maths learning and adult life.

Being able to explain how they got an answer, why that answer is right, and what might happen if a particular variable was changed are the hallmarks of a mathematician – simply getting the answer right ought to be a given. To be able to access many of the types of reasoning and problem solving problems they will encounter, children must be arithmetically fluent. We structure our teaching and progression in order to ensure that our children develop these necessary arithmetic skills.
